Lysistrata

This is perhaps the best known surviving play of the ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes. Set during the Peloponnesian war the women of Greece band together in order to stop the men of Greece from warring with each other. Lead by the title character Lysistrata, the women of Athens first capture the Acropolis effectively cutting off funding for the army then proceed to deny their husbands sex until they agree to stop their warring. Peace swiftly ensues but not before some of the greatest comedy ever written is played out onstage. There are many versions of this work in existence but none so skillfully combines classical, operatic and popular music as this one. Chosen as one of the ‘top ten’ picks of the 2004 Summer Works festival this adaptation will leave you rolling in the aisles.
